The Lights Out EP from New York based indie rock singer-songwriter, Josh Flagg, is available today via Residential Records.
It starts simply enough - a chord, a phrase, a riff, a melody. Josh
Flagg and his band experiment with these basic ingredients, rearranging
and combining them into an unexpected whole. Flagg's songs
can be anthemic, wrenching, dynamic or anywhere in between. He crafts
lyrics and sounds that can unsettle or soothe, that surprise and reward
you with repeated listens, and the Lights Out EP is no exception.
Recorded at Mission Sound in Brooklyn and produced by Kieran Kelly (Sufjan Stevens, Better Than Ezra), Flagg sought to create full bodied songs that capture the spirit of the lyrics within the music. Featuring a three pronged guitar attack, soaring vocals, and asymmetrical songwriting, Lights Out EP offers darker, harder, and more complex songs than the power-pop gems on Flagg's debut full length, Devastate Me (2013).
Tackling themes of acceptance and identity throughout the EP, Flagg describes the title track as a song, "about who you are when the lights go out and you're not putting a face on for anyone." Matching complex lyricism with striking guitar lines, Josh Flagg delivers some of his strongest work on Lights Out, and this is only the precursor to his full length.
Josh Flagg will be touring along the East Coast in the coming weeks in support of Lights Out EP.
