Motéma Music is thrilled to announce that two of the label's releases have received nominations. Vocalist Roseanne Vitro's The Music of Randy Newman has been nominated as Best Vocal Jazz Album and pianist Monty Alexander's Harlem Kingston Express Live! has been nominated as Best Reggae Album.
Pianist Monty Alexander celebrated his 50th year of phenomenal musicianship with the release of Harlem-Kingston Express Live! produced by Alexander, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola's Todd Barkan, Motéma Music's Jana Herzen, and Katherine Miller. When released, Harlem-Kingston Express Live! dominated the airwaves, reaching #1 on both the Jazz Week Jazz and Jazz Week World Music
radio charts (staying on the charts for 23 weeks and counting) and
music critics have been abuzz over Alexander's magic mingling of his two
life long loves: jazz and the music of Jamaica including elements of
reggae, mento & ska. Jazziz heralded the project a "joyous recording," and the New York Daily News labeled the CD, "a honeymoon of musical bliss."
The Music of Randy Newman
is Roseanna Vitro's take on the brilliant compositions of Randy Newman,
re-imagined through the arrangements of Mark Soskin, featuring Sara
Caswell on violin, Dean Johnson on bass, and Tim Horner drums. With The Music of Randy Newman,
Vitro explored groundbreaking new territory as the first jazz vocalist
to examine the richly melodic, sharply observant Randy Newman songbook.
Among the many accolades for Vitro's fresh interpretations and
arrangements of these classic songs was one from Randy Newman himself,
who raved, "Roseanna is a great artist." The critics agree: Down Beat rated the album 4 1/2 stars, while Jazz Times lauded Vitro as "one of the most compelling vocal stylists around."
The
53rd Grammy® Awards will take place on February 12, 2012.
